NordVPN review: fast and feature-rich, with a pricey renewal

NordVPN suits people who want a fast VPN with a password manager and scam filtering in one subscription. The catch is the renewal: the first term is cheap and the price after it is not.

ER By Erik Published June 1, 2026 · 12 min read · How I test

Heads up: if you buy through a link on this page, I may get a referral fee. The score above was set by my checklist first.

Bottom line

  • NordVPN came first in one lab speed round, where download speed fell only 1.94%, and it has the longest feature list of the big VPN brands.
  • The two-year Basic plan is $3.49 a month across its first 27 months; after that it renews at $139.08 a year, so I would treat the renewal figure as the real price.
  • A warrant in October 2024 led NordVPN to hand over account data. If anonymity matters to you, sign up with a one-time email address and a private payment method.

NordVPN suits people who want one subscription to cover a fast VPN, a password manager and some scam filtering, and who will put a date in the calendar ahead of the first renewal. The trade-off is the pricing pattern: the introductory rate looks cheap and the renewal rate does not. Most of this review is about enjoying the first without paying the second.

What works

  • Download speed fell only 1.94% in one lab test
  • RAM-only servers, with every US and UK server physical
  • Audits of its no-logs policy by Deloitte in 2023 and 2025
  • A 30-day refund window on every plan

What doesn’t

  • Basic renews at $139.08 a year, against $3.49 a month at signup
  • Threat Protection Pro is desktop only, and one review saw its detection fall
  • A warrant in October 2024 produced account data
  • 10 simultaneous connections, and no split tunneling on iPhone or Mac

What you are buying

NordVPN sells three tiers on its pricing page: Basic, Complete and Prime. Basic is the VPN itself, with 10 simultaneous connections and DNS-level filtering that blocks ads and malicious domains. Complete adds a next-gen antivirus, an ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage. Prime goes on to add identity tools, including identity theft insurance with $1,000,000 of cover and cyber extortion insurance with $100,000, available to US residents.

The review pages I read use older tier names and older prices, so I take plan names and prices from the pricing page and use the reviews for how the product behaves. I would start at Basic if you only want the VPN. Complete costs $4.49 a month on the two-year plan against $3.49 for Basic, and I would pay it only if you would otherwise buy a password manager or want the extra filtering. Prime only makes sense if you want the insurance.

Speed and streaming

Speed is where NordVPN has its strongest published results. In PCMag‘s latest round, download speed fell 1.94% and upload speed fell 5.54%, with latency up 67.04%, and that earned it a lab award for the fastest VPN.

A second review measured differently and reached a more mixed answer. On a 10 Gbps line, NordLynx, the service’s WireGuard-based protocol, reached 1249 Mbps, which TechRadar ranks behind Proton VPN and Surfshark on WireGuard and behind ExpressVPN’s Lightway Turbo. Distance also costs speed: from the UK to US servers NordLynx managed 688 Mbps in that review, against 1242 Mbps for Proton VPN. The two reviews disagree on who is fastest. I would read that as a tie at the top and not a reason to pick or skip NordVPN.

Streaming results are strong in both. Netflix opened in full on servers in Canada, Japan, the UK, the US and Australia in one review, and the other found only two services that stayed closed, US YouTube and Prime Video Australia. It also reports that every NordVPN server is streaming-optimized, so a blocked server is easy to swap for another. The same review recommends NordVPN to gamers on the strength of its low latency and jitter.

Apps, protocols and features

Native apps exist for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, alongside browser extensions, and the pricing page allows 10 simultaneous connections on every plan. One review notes the limit was six in 2024 and says that at this price it would like to see unlimited connections, which Surfshark offers. That limit is the main place where NordVPN is less generous than a rival.

Its own protocol, NordLynx, is built on WireGuard and uses post-quantum encryption, while a newer protocol, NordWhisper, makes VPN traffic look like ordinary HTTPS for places that block VPNs. OpenVPN is available too. One detail to know: switch post-quantum encryption on and it turns itself off whenever the app picks a protocol other than NordLynx, so choose NordLynx by hand if you want it.

The privacy tools go further than most. Double VPN routes traffic through two servers, though it covers 12 locations and does not let you choose the entry and exit servers. Onion Over VPN adds the Tor network from a few server locations. For everyday control there is a kill switch, split tunneling, custom DNS and auto-connect rules, and the kill switch recovered by itself in a review that uninstalled the network adapter driver mid-connection.

The gaps are between platforms. Neither iPhone nor Mac gets split tunneling, Android’s kill switch is the system one, which forces the VPN on at all times, and the antivirus-style protections in the paid tiers run on desktop only. If you split your time between a phone and a laptop, check the feature you care about on the device you will use.

Servers and coverage

Coverage is wide, and the reviews count it differently. One puts the network at 126 countries, up from 111 in March 2024, another at 127 in its summary and 137 in its server section, and the pricing page speaks of 225+ locations. NordVPN said in 2025 that an exact server count is not important, so one review now estimates it, and I would not lean on any single figure.

Two things matter more than the headline number. Every server runs from RAM, so nothing persists after a restart. And many locations are virtual: one review says most servers in Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific are virtual, and that all US and UK servers are physical. A virtual server can sit far from the country it claims, so expect slower connections in places that only have them.

Threat Protection Pro

The security suite in the paid tiers is called Threat Protection Pro, and the pricing page describes the malware protection as powered by a next-gen antivirus. Both reviews are more careful. It checks pages and downloads as they arrive, and it does not scan files already on your computer or remove malware that is already there. I would treat it as a download and browsing filter and keep a normal antivirus beside it.

The test results disagree, so I will show both. In one review’s test of 100 malware-hosting URLs it blocked 68% in total, down from 99% in the previous round, and phishing detection fell from 100% to 82%. The other review threw 50 brand-new malware and phishing pages at it and recorded 92% of phishing sites and 80% of malware sites blocked, the best of any VPN security add-on it had measured. The pages and the timing differed, so these are not a contradiction, but neither makes a case for relying on it alone.

Privacy and trust

NordVPN says it does not log browsing history, traffic or IP addresses. The closest it comes is a username and a timestamp, kept to enforce the device limit and deleted within 15 minutes of a session ending. NordVPN states that its income comes from subscriptions, not from selling customer data. One review marks down its website for third-party cookies and social media widgets that can record visitors’ IP addresses, which I find odd on a site that sells privacy.

The audit record is long. Deloitte checked the no-logs claim in January 2023 and again in February 2025, Cure53 examined the apps and infrastructure in February 2023, and PwC audited the company in 2018 and 2020. A second review counts six audits and dates the latest to the end of 2025, so the sources differ on the most recent one. The company is incorporated in Panama and was founded in Lithuania.

The warrant matters more than the audits for anyone who needs anonymity. A warrant in October 2024 led NordVPN to disclose payment-related data, confirmation that the account existed and the account email address, with no connection or activity data. That fits the no-logs claim, but payment details and an email can still point to a person. NordVPN accepts cryptocurrency and sells prepaid cards in selected retail stores, which gives you options.

Two older issues round out the picture. A 2018 breach of one server at a third-party data center in Finland was announced only in October 2019. More recent is the renewal dispute: one review reports a $100m lawsuit filed in August 2024 and a second action in May 2025, and another reports a class action on behalf of California and North Carolina that was awaiting arbitration as of September 2025. In January 2026 a hacker claimed to have breached a development server, which NordVPN denies.

Support

Support runs through a help center, live chat and email tickets, and the apps link straight to them. One review got a chat reply after 2 to 3 minutes. In the other, the chat agent could not resolve an installation fault and redirected the reviewer to a ticket, which was answered in just under two hours with a new download link. The reviews disagree on email speed, with the first review reporting a wait of around 18 hours, so I would plan for somewhere in between.

The help center is detailed, but one review says you must click through several pages before the chat or ticket option appears. That is a minor annoyance. I would still prefer a visible contact button, because the moment you need support is rarely the moment you want to browse.

Pricing

PlanPriceBilledRenews at
Basic$3.49/mo$94.23 for the first 27 months$139.08 a year
Complete$4.49/mo$121.23 for the first 27 months$219.48 a year
Prime$7.49/mo$202.23 for the first 27 months$296.28 a year

Prices from NordVPN’s pricing page, checked June 2026.

The two-year plans carry 3 extra months, which is why the first term is 27 months, and the arithmetic holds: $3.49 × 27 = $94.23. After that, Basic renews at $139.08 a year. The renewal works out at $139.08 ÷ 12 = $11.59 a month, which is more than triple the introductory rate. The one-year Basic plan is $65.88 for the first 12 months, then renews at the same $139.08.

The renewal is the reason I hold the value score down. One review reports that users have seen increases of more than 200% with little notice. The terms on the pricing page say an email goes out before each charge on a term longer than one month, and that the charge can be taken up to 14 days before renewal. I would not rely on either. Turn off auto-renewal in your Nord Account on day one, which keeps access until the paid term ends, and decide again when the date nears.

Month to month, the pricing page lists $14.99 for Basic, $19.99 for Complete and $29.99 for Prime. Two reviews list a lower $12.99 for monthly Basic, so the figure you meet depends on where you read it, and I would trust the pricing page. One of those reviews says the average VPN costs about $10.30 a month and places NordVPN among the most expensive it has covered. Sales tax may apply on top.

Each plan comes with a 30-day refund window, and the request has to be made inside it. The pricing page does not mention a free trial. One review says a short trial exists on Android only and another says Android and iOS, so I would treat the guarantee as your safety net and not plan around a trial.

How it scored

Core features, 9.0. This is the highest core score I give any VPN in my set. The speed result, RAM-only servers, post-quantum NordLynx, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and strong streaming results add up to the broadest toolkit of the group. I held it below 9.5 because features differ by platform and the added protections are desktop only.

Ease of use, 8.5. The apps look much alike across platforms and the Windows app opens with a short guide to its features. It loses points because one review calls the Windows interface busy, and key settings such as the protocol and the kill switch sit inside a settings screen and not on the main one.

Privacy and data, 8.0. Minimal retained data, RAM-only servers and a regular audit cadence are real strengths. The warrant that exposed payment data and an email address, the third-party cookies on its website and the late disclosure of the 2018 breach stop me from going higher.

Value, 6.5. The first term is cheap for what you get, but the renewal is more than triple and the device limit is lower than at some rivals. A VPN that depends on you remembering to cancel is one I score down.

Support, 7.0. Round-the-clock chat and email are reassuring. Email speed varied widely between reviews, one chat agent could not resolve an installation fault and the contact option takes some finding.

The five scores combine, using the weights explained on the How I test page, into a total of 8.0.

Alternatives worth a look

Proton VPN

Go for it if you want something simpler and cheaper, with a free plan as well. One review shares its top award between Proton VPN and NordVPN, and notes that Proton does not cap data on its free plan.

FAQ

How many devices does NordVPN allow?

Every plan includes ten simultaneous connections, according to the pricing page. NordVPN enforces the limit with a username and timestamp that are deleted within 15 minutes after a session ends.

Does NordVPN have a free trial?

Refunds are available within 30 days of purchase, but the pricing page does not mention a trial. One review reports a short trial through the Android app and another through Android and iOS, so use the guarantee as your fallback.

Does NordVPN keep logs?

It says it does not log browsing history, traffic or IP addresses, and keeps only a username and timestamp for 15 minutes after a session. A warrant in October 2024 produced payment-related data and the account email, but no connection or activity data.

How do I avoid the renewal price?

Turn off auto-renewal in your Nord Account soon after you sign up, or switch to a fresh offer before the term runs out. You keep access until the end of the term you paid for.
